Class Description
This fall, the 1,000-year-old Bayeux Tapestry will travel to England for the first (and last) time. It will hang in the British Museum for ten months before being sent back to France in time to celebrate the millennium of the birth of William the Conqueror.
This class will dive into the history of the Tapestry (which is not, in fact, a tapestry), to learn about the eleventh-century Anglo-Saxon world and to uncover the secrets it still holds today. We will look not only at its past, but also its future, investigating in real time the reactions to the display of the Tapestry in London. Finally, we'll look at other modern tapestries that draw inspiration from the Tapestry, like the Great Tapestry of Scotland and the Keiskamma Tapestry, and consider the impact and efficacy of such visual modes of storytelling.
Dr. Caroline Malloy has a PhD in Art History from UW-Madison. She teaches and lectures internationally on heritage projects, empires, and world’s fairs. She supports women writers through her nonfiction editing business, The Write Malloy LLC, and is a local fitness coach in Chicago.
