Beyond the Real: Dada and Surrealism

The horrors of World War I prompted some artists in Europe and America to critique prevailing political and cultural values. Formed mid-war, Dada featured irrationality, chance, and unconventional formats. In the 1920s and beyond, the Surrealists also favored subversive subjects and styles.

Newberry Adult Education Seminars will meet virtually via Zoom. For more information about the Newberry’s virtual seminars, including a Zoom tutorial, please see our Virtual Seminars FAQ page. If you have questions about online learning, please reach out to seminars@newberry.org.

Seminar Description

The horrors of World War I prompted some artists in Europe and America to critique prevailing political and cultural values. Formed mid-war, Dada featured irrationality, chance, and unconventional formats. In the 1920s and beyond, the Surrealists also favored subversive subjects and styles. Employing unexpected juxtapositions and practices cultivating the unconscious, artists produced works ranging from dream-like imagery to abstract and suggestive forms. The seminar culminates in a virtual tour of Surrealist art in Chicago museums.

Five sessions. Registration – $220
