Seminar Description
“Fascism” is among the most difficult to define of all political terms. This course will seek a definition by exploring those movements generally regarded as fascist that emerged in Europe between the two world wars, including Italian fascism, National Socialism in Germany, the Heimwehr in Austria, the Falange in Spain, the Iron Guard in Romania, and the Arrow Cross in Hungary. We will also consider the social, economic, and cultural conditions that contributed to their appeal. Ten sessions.
Frank A. Biletz received his PhD in history from the University of Chicago, with a primary specialization in modern British and Irish history and a secondary field in modern German history. He is currently Adjunct Instructor in History at Loyola University Chicago and has been teaching seminars at the Newberry since 1994.
