Class Description
Traditional book structures such as the scroll, the accordion, or the codex evolved to meet specific record-keeping or tale-telling needs. The codex persists as THE dominant book structure simply because it’s the most expedient and reliable way to record, store, and retrieve information. What choices would we make if we were asked to evolve these stable book structures into the twenty-first century? Join paper engineer Shawn Sheehy in exploring one possible solution: eliminating sewing and gluing, and involving tech to prepare materials. In this three-hour workshop you will use a kit of pre-cut materials and a few simple hand tools to fold and lock your way to two novel book structures. We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a range of data-storage structures. All levels welcome.
Shawn Sheehy has been teaching in the book arts since 2001. His work is widely collected. Sheehy has authored and engineered two trade books. He directed The Movable Book Society from 2018 to 2023. He holds a Book Arts MFA.
