Seminar Description

From modest beginnings in eighteenth century missions, musical activity in California has grown to distinction in all areas of classical and popular music. San Francisco and Los Angeles are home to renowned opera companies and symphony orchestras, many varieties of jazz and rock have thrived in the state, and Hollywood has contributed film scores, musicals, and movie songs to California’s musical history. In this course, we will listen to and discuss contributions made by California artists to each of the above genres .

Guy A. Marco (BMus, American Conservatory of Music; PhD, University of Chicago) has taught at 11 universities, written or edited 50 books, and published over a hundred articles and reviews. He has led Newberry seminars since 1996.
