Local Constitutionalism and Royal Prerogative in Restoration Massachusetts Bay, Adrian Weimer

Most Massachusetts Bay colonists supported their Court’s 1665 decision to shut down the royal commissioners’ court of appeal, but formulating a response to Charles II’s 1666 demand for their governors’ presence in London was more difficult. As colonists articulated the constitutional limits on royal prerogative, they drew on debates from the English civil wars, combining older ideas about mixed sovereignty with more novel accounts of voluntary subjecthood.
