Seminar Description

Considered the greatest Brazilian writer of the twentieth century, Clarice Lispector often elicits worthy comparison to Joyce, Woolf, and Proust, and her genius is no less singular than theirs. Few writers are as adept at capturing the mystery of the simplest fact – of an object, of consciousness, of our very existence. Unnerving, comic, sometimes grotesque, her short stories are an ideal introduction to her fictional world. Seven sessions.

Mike Levine’s most recent Newberry seminar was on Marcel Proust’s Time Regained. He has a PhD in English from Rice University.
