Collecting Histories: Introduction to Provenance Research

NULL

This workshop opens medieval and early modern books at the Newberry through the lens of their provenance histories. Students will engage with original archival materials that illuminate when, how, and why specific materials entered the collection, and examine the patterns of thought that have shaped library and museum collections in Chicago and beyond. Our goal is to develop the practical skills that are required for the in-depth study of provenance, while also gaining a solid understanding of the historical, theoretical, and ethical issues that cultural institutions must keep in view as they continue to acquire and interpret works of international significance.
