Little Bits of Everything: New Acquisitions in Manuscript and Print

Description

Curators Jill Gage and Suzanne Karr Schmidt will present a range of new collection items from the 17th century to the present. From a scientific instrument and landscape-studded manuscript by a German-Swiss surveyor (an avid reader of Galileo's latest work), to an evocatively abstract modern calligraphic ode to Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly's Frankenstein manuscript, these new additions will charm and inspire you.

About the Speakers

Suzanne Karr Schmidt has been the George Amos Poole III Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts at the Newberry since 2017. She works on the materiality and use of prints and books, notably her monograph Interactive and Sculptural Printmaking in the Renaissance (2018), and exhibition catalogue Altered and Adorned: Using Renaissance Prints in Daily Life (Art Institute of Chicago, 2011). Her Newberry exhibitions include Renaissance Invention: Stradanus’s Nova Reperta, co-curated with Lia Markey in 2020, Pop-Up Books Through the Ages in 2023, and Impressive Textiles: Printing on Fabric, opening in December 2026.
