For more than a century, the Newberry has been known as one of the country's premier libraries for the studies of cartography and local history. Please join Matt Rutherford, Curator of Genealogy and Local History, and Dave Weimer, Director of the Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography and Robert A. Holland Curator of Maps, to learn about a new archive of a 19th-century telegraph operator, delve into a 1930s catalog of secret gambling devices, investigate railroad and car material, and explore maps of sex work and of guerilla artwork.
About the Speakers
Matt Rutherford, MLIS, has been Curator of Genealogy and Local History at the Newberry Library for fifteen years. In addition to managing the Newberry's renowned genealogy collection, Matt has also answered thousands of local and family history reference questions. He is the co-author of A Bibliography of African American History at the Newberry Library. In 2023 he received the National Genealogical Society's Filby Award for Genealogical Librarianship.
