Seminar Description
2019 is a special year for admirers of Leonardo da Vinci, as we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death. This seminar will celebrate Leonardo by focusing on the wonderful machines documented in a selection of materials held at the Newberry. In particular, we will explore Leonardo’s flying machines, hydraulic machines, and war machines, as well as a few musical instruments and theatrical technologies. Join us for this unique opportunity to encounter and appreciate the power of Leonardo’s imagination.

Daniele Macuglia is a historian and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago. Trained as a physicist in Italy, he received the first prize at the Italian National Olympiads for Young Scientists. He earned his PhD in the history of science from the University of Chicago in 2017.
