Seminar Description

700 years after it first appeared, Dante’s Inferno still fascinates readers. Dante dramatized his descent into the underworld as a powerful experience that evoked such emotions in him as fear, anger, pity and horror. In this course, we will read and discuss the Inferno, while seeking to understand the historical, religious, political, and artistic climates that influenced the work. We will also view artwork from dozens of artists over the centuries in order to understand how artists depicted Dante as well as the Inferno's characters, settings, and punishments.

Linda Levine holds an MA in English education from Northwestern University. She has taught English and humanities courses for several decades, including previous seminars at the Newberry.
