Class Description
British artist David Hockney (b. 1937) is one of the most important and endlessly creative artists of our time. Over his long career, his style and subject matter have become and remain recognizable, even iconic. He paints, draws, and prints charming portraits, landscapes, and interior scenes in a straightforward, somewhat reductive style in flattened spaces with pure, vibrant colors. But he has demonstrated an amazing range and willingness to evolve and experiment in terms of media. He is a painter, draftsman, printmaker, and photographer, and in recent years has also worked in digital media using computer apps and iPad drawing programs to create works that are ultimately either printed or shown on screens. He has also had a robust and prolific career in the creation of stage sets and costumes. In this one-session program, we will examine the strong links between Hockney's life and his art and will see through a great many images both the continuity and the evolution of his work. The format will be a combination of lecture and discussion in a single two-hour session. Adequate time will be reserved for a dedicated Q and A session at the end.
Judy Pomeranz is an art critic, lecturer, art advisor, and fiction writer based in Chicago and Washington, D.C. She has presented dozens of programs and lectures at The Smithsonian Institution for over twenty years and has been a regular instructor at Newberry for nearly a decade.
