Why does Frankenstein’s newly-created Creature grin? This essay explores how Mary Shelley overlays her gothic thriller with three instances of Death’s grin from Paradise Lost, critiquing not only Milton’s vengeful Satan but also Milton’s satisfaction theory of atonement.
