Difficult Music 2.0

This seminar will examine eight works of twentieth- and twenty-first- century classical music that can be hard to approach, focusing on composers from traditionally underrepresented populations, including Ruth Crawford Seeger Kaija Saariaho, Alberto Ginastera, Toru Takemitsu, and George Lewis.

For the Fall 2021 term, we're offering a mix of virtual and in-person classes. Although we are still primarily virtual, you will find a smaller selection of in-person seminars in the schedule. Seminar Description

This seminar will examine eight works of twentieth- and twenty-first- century classical music that can be hard to approach, focusing on composers from traditionally underrepresented populations, including Ruth Crawford Seeger, Kaija Saariaho, Alberto Ginastera, Toru Takemitsu, and George Lewis.

Four sessions. Registration – $195

Lawrence Axelrod is a composer, pianist, and opera tour creator/leader. His works have been performed in numerous venues throughout the US, Europe, and New Zealand. He is a founding member of the Chicago Composers' Consortium
