EXPERIMENTAL WOMEN: WOMEN WRITERS AND SCIENTIFIC WORK IN THE LONG EIGHTEENTH CENTURY

Experimental Women traces a vibrant alternative tradition of women's scientific labor in the eighteenth century - a tradition which contested, engaged with, and ultimately diverged from dominant ideas about (male) scientific method and practice. From Eliza Haywood to Mary Delany to Maria Edgeworth, British women as writers, artists, and creators produced new and often innovative scientific content that has the potential to reshape what we think of as the primary narrative of science in the period. This talk will provide an overview of the in-progress monograph project, including its major stakes, central figures, and directions for future research.
