Whether from Vienna, Bari, Mississippi, or Michoacán, immigrants have brought their foodways, along with their work ethic, to Chicago. In this seminar, we will explore the history of Chicago’s diverse street food cultures in order to discuss Chicago history more broadly. Two meetings will take place at the Newberry, with historical presentations and readings; the other meetings will be (weather-dependent) walking tours of neighborhoods, followed by (optional, but highly recommended) meals at restaurants that exemplify our topics.
Six sessions. E - $210, L - $231
Bill Savage teaches Chicago literature, history, and culture in the English Department at Northwestern University by day; by night, he navigates Chicago via its hot dog stands, taquerias, and bars. He has taught adult education seminars at the Newberry Library since 1992.
- A selection of shorter materials distributed by the instructor.
There is no reading assignment for the first class.
