Class Description

Beginning with an overview of copyright and fair use, gain an understanding of what is protected, whether you should register your work, and how to go about that if you so choose. Explore to what extent you can use the work of others through fair use, including written material, email, photos, and letters. We will then go over what to include in a query or book proposal, and how to find the right publisher for your work. Finally, we will discuss the elements of publishing contracts and tips on how to negotiate a fair deal.

Amy Cook is an attorney working with writers and other creative professionals advising on copyright, contracts, and vetting manuscripts for legal issues. She is also an adjunct communications professor and previously worked as a literary agent.
