Seminar Description

The ghost is one of the most enduring motifs in storytelling, and is ubiquitous across epochs and cultures. Just in time for Halloween, this single-day interdisciplinary seminar will trace the history of the ghost in literature, film, and theater with an emphasis on examining how its symbolism has changed over time. We will unpack stories by Henry James, Shirley Jackson, and William Shakespeare, as well as discuss the emergence of “hauntology” and the contemporary cultural phenomenon of “ghosting.”

Harrison Sherrod manages a film production company by day and teaches seminars at the Newberry by night. He has led courses on everything from metaphysical detectives and con games to Star Wars and Marxism.
