Historical Tacketed Bookbinding

Tackets have been used as functional and structural elements in bookbinding since early times. In this workshop, participants will explore structural tacketing through demonstration and practice and have the unique opportunity to examine historical examples of tacketing in early Newberry bindings.

Seminar Description

Tackets have been used as functional and structural elements in bookbinding since early times. In this workshop, participants will explore structural tacketing through demonstration and practice and have the unique opportunity to examine historical examples of tacketing in early Newberry bindings. Various types of tackets will be studied, including primary, secondary, endband, corner, and quire tacketing. Participants will complete two tacketed bookbinding models.

Lesa Dowd is the Director of Conservation Services for the Newberry Library. Outside of her daily work in conservation, she enjoys studying historical bookbinding structures and practicing the art of fine bookbinding. She has studied French fine binding technique with Tini Miura and Monique Lallier.
