Seminar Description
Profuse, energetic, and original, the Baroque period produced some of the most exciting and frequently performed works from any period in music history. The Baroque lasted from 1600-1750 and not only laid the groundwork for the Classical and Romantic periods but profoundly impacted modern music as well. We will discuss Baroque innovations in musical styles, forms, and norms, examining the works of such great composers as Monteverdi, Frescobaldi, Purcell, Vivaldi, Handel, Bach, and Telemann. We will also explore how the inventions of the Baroque period have influenced music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Ten sessions.
Stephen Kleiman holds a BS Degree from The Mannes College of Music, an MM Degree in music composition from the University of Michigan, has conducted several European orchestras, and his compositions have been performed throughout the world. He has been teaching at the Newberry for eight years.
