Class Description

This class will explore Jackson Park, the Obama Presidential Center, and the surrounding neighborhoods through a series of walking tours and readings. We will study the evolution of the park from its beginnings in 1871 to today; the history of the Obama Center from its initial planning to its final built form; and the impact of the changes to the park over the years and the opening of the center on the adjacent communities of Jackson Park Highlands and Woodlawn. The class will visit the Obama Center campus, but not the museum (which requires paid admission and advanced scheduling for groups).

Participants will be responsible for getting to Jackson Park on their own. Directions for reaching the meeting spots for each week by transit or car will be provided.

Please read our Walking Tour Policies. The rain date is August 22.

Diane Dillon is a scholar in residence at the Newberry Library. She holds a PhD in the history of art from Yale.
