Seminar Description

Gain a deeper understanding of America's original music with this multimedia course. Learn about the great musicians of the jazz tradition, explore the music's fascinating social history, and discover Chicago's unique contributions to the art form. We will study the development of early jazz in New Orleans, the Swing Era, bebop, fusion, and more. No previous familiarity with the idiom necessary. Eight sessions.

Dr. Karl E. H. Seigfried holds three degrees in music and has appeared on 27 recordings as bassist and guitarist, including award-winning jazz albums of his own compositions. He has played with Bobby McFerrin, Roscoe Mitchell, Fred Anderson, John Medeski, and many other jazz greats.
