Seminar Description
James Joyce began his remarkable career with the stories of Dubliners (1914) and the publication of a novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). We will discuss a selection of eight Dubliners stories that create realistic portraits of the economic, religious, and gender relations that predominated in the Dublin of Joyce's time, and then immerse ourselves in the trials and the coming-to-consciousness of Stephen Dedalus, the autobiographical protagonist of A Portrait.
Joseph Heininger is a Professor of English at Dominican University. He has published on Seamus Heaney’s responses to Dante and Joyce’s advertising fictions in Ulysses. He is writing a book on Seamus Heaney and the Imprint of Translation.
