Seminar Description

Dangerous Liaisons, an epistolary novel, exposes powerful aristocrats deeply engaged in seduction and intrigue. We will read this remarkable, dramatic 18th century French novel as the compelling cautionary tale its author intended it to be. Our reading will be supplemented by historical and critical documents found in the Newberry’s collection as well as scenes from the 1988 film adaptation. Six sessions.

Diann Lapin (MA, MEd) has taught a wide range of literature and humanities courses at several universities, including at Northwestern’s medical school. Her research interests are focused on cultural and class tensions in late eighteenth century France.
