Seminar Description

Leonard Bernstein once declared, "The 20th century has been a badly written drama from the beginning." Devoted to one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, this seminar follows Leonard Bernstein through the decades in his roles as composer, conductor, educator, philanthropist, and social activist. Explore a life filled with as much grief as accolades and learn how Leonard Bernstein's legacy has shaped the past, present, and future of American music.

Stephen Kleiman holds a BS from The Mannes College of Music and an MM in music composition/conducting from the University of Michigan. He has conducted throughout Europe and the US. His compositions are performed regularly, and he has been teaching at The Newberry since 2008.
