Seminar Description

London’s musical life can be traced to the Roman invasions of Britain in the first century BCE. After a quiet period in the Middle Ages, the area around London became a center for church music, secular song, opera, and oratorio. In recent times the metropolis has been the site of renowned orchestras and opera companies and home to many distinguished composers. We will trace London’s complex musical history, listening to examples of music from various genres and periods. Eight sessions.

Guy A. Marco (PhD, University of Chicago) has taught in 11 universities, written or edited 50 books and published over 100 articles and reviews. He has led Newberry seminars since 1996.
