Class Description
Whether your ancestor crossed an ocean, a river, a desert—on foot, by rail, or by boat—their journey can be mapped out and visualized using various tools such as GoogleMaps/Earth, ArcGIS, and many others, including built-in mapping features within your favorite genealogy software. Join us as we tour ancestral homes, villages, or neighborhoods using current and historical maps. Learn who your ancestor’s F.A.N. (friends, associates, neighbors) club was by mapping their social network. We will also look at valuable mapping resources such as the David Rumsey Map Collection, Sanborn Fire Maps, and the Bureau of Land Management Maps. Some familiarity with online maps (street views, directions, satellite views, etc.) will be helpful.
Carla Zimowsk has been involved in genealogy research for 30 years and has taught numerous classes for local adult education programs. She holds a MIS from Rutgers University, just completed Boston University's Program in Genealogy Research, and has 25 years of supporting technology for historians. She holds memberships with NGS, APG, CGS.
All virtual classes are recorded and made available to participants registered in the class. These recordings are password-protected and available for up to two weeks after the class ends.
