Seminar Description

From the most famous first sentence in American literature to its climactic chase scene, Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick is a great challenge—and memorable experience—in the life of any reader. This seminar will help participants chart an exciting course through the novel. We will also explore many of the beautiful illustrated editions of the book that will be included in the concurrent Newberry exhibition designed to commemorate Melville’s 200th birthday.

Will Hansen is Director of Reader Services and Curator of Americana at the Newberry. He has previously taught Newberry seminars on Melville’s novellas and on Alexander Hamilton. He is currently at work on the exhibition “Melville: Finding America at Sea,” which will open in January of 2019.
