Musical Indianism: Reassessing the Archive

The term "Indianist" refers to music in the early 20th century that was inspired American Indian music, or directly quoted ethnographic transcriptions of American Indian song. Torie Clark discusses how to reread the archival sources used in Indianist scholarship and how to expand that archive to refocus the movement on indigenous labor and the music's effect on American Indian communities. She includes examples from her research on the Edward Ayer collection on musical ethnography and American Indian life.
