Old Sailors Invade the Newberry

Christopher’s book, Ungentle Goodnights: Life in a Home for Elderly and Disabled Naval Sailors and Marines and the Perilous Seafaring Careers that Brought Them There is at last published. He will use this Colloquium to provide a brief overview of the book, the historical problems it tackles, and to recognize and thank all his Newberry friends and colleagues—and some from farther afield—for everything they did to make Ungentle Goodnights possible. No one writes a book alone! Christopher will conclude by relating the story of the U. S. Naval Home’s first sailor-librarian, Angus Wheeler, after which the audience will have an opportunity to vote on whether Angus would have fit in at the Newberry.
