“One Vast Studio”: American Artists in Late Nineteenth-Century Paris

After the Civil War, hundreds of American artists flocked to Paris to enroll in its prestigious art schools and academies, study the great masterpieces of the Louvre, and encounter avant-garde French art.

Seminar Description

After the Civil War, hundreds of American artists flocked to Paris to enroll in its prestigious art schools and academies, study the great masterpieces of the Louvre, and encounter avant-garde French art. We will examine the careers and works of artists such as Thomas Eakins, James McNeill Whistler, Mary Cassatt, and John Singer Sargent and consider the broader cultural and economic motivations behind their Parisian training, as well as its lasting legacy in their art and teaching.

Six sessions. Registration – $210

Tricia Smith Scanlan earned her PhD in art history from Indiana University, specializing in American art and visual culture. She has worked at the Indiana University Art Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago and has taught art history at Indiana University and DePaul University.
