Class Description
The Palestinian auteur Elia Suleiman is one of the greatest living filmmakers in the Arab world today. His complex films explore the nature of time, memory, and lived experience in times of political and social volatility. We will focus on Suleiman's film, The Time That Remains (2009). Set in Nazareth, the film is a dark comedy that examines the memory of one man (Suleiman's father) as he goes about living his daily life in the face of war, occupation, and displacement.
Laurel Harig-Khan graduated from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago in 2019 and from Bard College in 2008. She also studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and at the American University of Beirut. She teaches Arabic and courses on the history, culture, and politics of the Middle East and North Africa.
