Class Description
Kirigami is a form of Japanese paper craft that—unlike origami—allows for cutting and gluing. And though it isn’t known by this name in the trades, kirigami is also a common engineering approach for efficiently and economically producing commercial pop-up books.
Most frequently, kirigami refers to pop-up structures that are formed with no glue from a single sheet of paper. Curiously, Czech paper engineer Vojtěch Kubašta built a career from engineering over 300 titles with this very approach. In this three-hour workshop, you will join master paper engineer Shawn Sheehy in building a no-glue kirigami pop-up book of your own. Though the focus here is pure mechanism, you will have the opportunity to observe how Kubašta implemented and applied foundational kirigami structures in his work. A kit of pre-cut materials and hand tools will be provided. All levels are welcome.
Shawn Sheehy has been teaching in the book arts since 2001. His work is widely collected. Sheehy has authored and engineered two trade books. He directed The Movable Book Society from 2018 to 2023. He holds a Book Arts MFA.
