In their writings, early modern Spanish women such as Ana Caro and María de Zayas appear to isolate themselves from the male literary world. Yet the documentation recently studied by the Spanish Research team, Bibliography of Spanish Women Writers (BIESES) shows that women writers desired the same attention as their male peers, although they concealed their determination to succeed as writers under words that presented them as powerless. These documents and scattered references to their writings demonstrate early modern women’s active involvement in promoting their work, revealing how their actions belied their words.
