Seminar Description
Since its beginning in the Anglo-American world, mystery fiction has diversified and spread across the globe. Many English-language authors now feature protagonists of color, or set their mysteries in locations beyond the borders of the US and England, with local detectives at the helm. We will explore how these global detectives offer readers escapist stories, toying with the familiar and the unfamiliar, and serve as vehicles for social critique. Eight sessions.
Elżbieta Foeller-Pituch is the Assistant Director of the Chabraja Center for Historical Studies at Northwestern University, where she also teaches literature classes.
