Seminar Description

Beginning to advanced students are welcome in this intimate workshop examining vulnerability, personal storytelling, performance, and craft. In addition to learning about the art, science, and psychology of vulnerability as it relates to the art of storytelling, participants will learn about the elements of good stories, how to mine our lives for resonant tales, and how to shape them for the page and stage. If you’d like to craft and perform your true, personal stories on stage, this is the class for you! And if you’re afraid to do that, this is really the class for you! No prior writing experience necessary. All participants will have the opportunity to share their stories publicly after the class through Jill’s monthly showcase, Story Sessions. Watch a recent Newberry example here.To maintain an intimate class size, and to allow for scheduling flexibility, we are offering two sections of this seminar. These will be the same in content, just offered at different times. Find Section A here

Five sessions. Registration – $300

Jill Howe produces Story Sessions, a monthly showcase featuring true stories and real-time illustrations. In addition, Jill organizes and teaches workshops and has presented a Tedx Talk focusing on vulnerability through storytelling. She is also a resident storyteller at the Field Museum, where she develops kid-friendly true stories about beloved animals who need to have their memories dusted off. Jill holds an MAT in English and has taught in public and private Chicago high schools and North Shore learning clinics. This is her fourth storytelling workshop at the Newberry.
