Seminar Description

This walking tour will introduce you to the history and foods of Albany Park’s Kedzie Retail District, known for its Middle Eastern restaurants, bakeries, and groceries. You will spend the first session at the Newberry, learning more about the history of this culturally rich neighborhood. The second session will consist of a walking culinary tour of the Kedzie Retail District and will stop at 4-5 venues, allowing participants the opportunity to sample the area’s signature fare, from falafel to baklava to charcoal-grilled kabobs. The walking tour will cover approximately 1 mile, starting near the Kedzie stop on the CTA Brown Line.

Jean Iversen is a Chicago-based writer and editor. Her most recent book, Local Flavor: Restaurants That Shaped Chicago's Neighborhoods, was published in 2018 by Northwestern University Press. She is also the author of three editions of BYOB Chicago.
