Excuse our dust!
The Newberry is undergoing an extensive first floor renovation in 2018. This project will be ongoing during the Summer 2018 seminar term. The Adult Education Seminars Program still has use of the basement classrooms, but please check this link frequently for the latest conditions - which exterior doors are open or closed, where to find an accessible entrance, which restrooms are available, etc.
Because of the renovation, the Newberry Bookstore will be closed during the Summer 2018 term. As such, seminar participants will be responsible for acquiring all required texts for their seminars on their own. We apologize sincerely for the inconvenience, and appreciate your understanding. We have put together a list of helpful resources that should make it easy to find the books you need.
Opera lovers, take note! This seminar introduces attendees to legends of operatic singing, many of whom have been unjustly forgotten. These artists are true individuals, both vocally and stylistically, and offer an endlessly rewarding glimpse into the development of great singing in the first half of the twentieth century. Different sessions will be devoted to singers of Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, and Strauss, as well as to "vocal transitions" (soprano to mezzo-soprano, tenor to baritone, etc.) and contrasting interpreters heard in the same aria. Five sessions.
Roger Pines, dramaturg and broadcast co-host at Lyric Opera of Chicago, has lectured on great singing for the American Institute of Musical Studies (Graz, Austria), the Wagner Society, and the University of Texas at Austin. He is also a writer, adjudicator, and repertoire consultant.
