Seminar Description

This course will provide an intensive five-week introduction to the Italian Renaissance. Through a combination of readings and class discussion, we will develop a taste for the flowering of arts, science, and letters. We will survey figures like Dante, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, and Giordano Bruno, and explore topics such as the Copernican Revolution, the rise of the printing press, the Roman Inquisition, and the Renaissance Man.

Daniele Macuglia is a historian and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago. Trained as a physicist in Italy, he received First Prize at the Italian National Olympiads for Young Scientists. He earned his PhD in the early modern history of science from the University of Chicago.
