Seminar Description
Between the early fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, the transatlantic slave trade became the largest forced migration in human history. This three-part course explores the rise of the transatlantic slave trade from a new perspective. After a stage-setting first session examining the origin of the trade and its connection to the Royal African Company--a seventeenth-century English trading firm that operated in West Africa--the remaining sessions turn the conventional approach upside down, focusing on the varieties of African resistance to the transatlantic slave trade.

Richard Bell is a professor of history at the University of Maryland and the author of Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home, which was shortlisted for the 2020 George Washington Prize and the 2020 Harriet Tubman Prize.
