Beginning January 2018 the Newberry will be undertaking renovation of much of the first floor. Because of the renovation, the Newberry Bookstore will be closed during the Winter/Spring and Summer 2018 terms. Seminar Description

Today’s Russia appears less enigmatic when considered in the context of its intellectual history. In the environment of censorship and stifled social debate, Russian thinkers traditionally expressed their ideas through literature. The course will illuminate the Russia of today by tracing its ideas from the present day back to Russia’s first attempts to find its position between East and West, define its identity, and assert its national pride. Six sessions.

Nina Wieda teaches at Northwestern University, after earning her PhD in Russian literature from Northwestern University and her MA in Nationalism Studies from Central European University.
