Seminar Description

A recent survey of writers and literary critics by the New York Times found Toni Morrison’s Beloved the best work of American fiction of the past 25 years. An enthralling and shocking work of historical fiction, Beloved portrays a woman’s escape from slavery with her children – and the aftermath of their flight. In the seminar, we will read and discuss the challenging novel to better understand the historical, social, and cultural climate of the times. We will also discuss the literary techniques Morrison uses in her supernatural story, as she explores such themes as mother love and self-love, the trauma of slavery, and slavery’s effects on survivors. If you have not yet read the book, please do not start before the class begins. Six sessions.

Linda Levine (MA in English Education from Northwestern University) has taught English and Humanities for decades, including previous seminars at The Newberry on Beloved, Dante’s The Inferno, and contemporary literature.
