This workshop will provide early-career graduate students with an introduction to medieval primary sources, especially manuscripts and early printed books. By working closely with materials from the Newberry's rich collection, students will gain an understanding of what medieval primary sources are and how to use them to unlock the myriad stories that tell us about thought, society, and culture in the Middle Ages. Students with concentrations in any field or discipline related to medieval studies are encouraged to apply. Activities at this workshop will include:
- an interactive rare books session devoted to unlocking a medieval story contained in a range of sources
- a paleography practicum and a overview of the history of Latin scripts
- an introduction to the resources for medieval studies available at the Newberry, both original manuscript sources and printed editions.
Prerequisites: None, although a familiarity with Latin would be helpful.
