Class Description
Late nineteenth-century Victorian culture produced some of the greatest horror novels in literature. In this seminar we will explore three classic horror novels from the late Victorian period: Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, RL Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla. We will take a close look at the historical and cultural background of the Victorian period and explore why Victorians were so drawn to gothic horror and the supernatural.
Katrina Kemble is a literature, writing, and communications instructor at both Loyola University and Columbia College Chicago. She has a special love for Victorian gothic literature.
