The female singer of eighteenth-century Italian opera has received far less scholarly attention than her famous castrated male counterpart. In this talk Margaret Butler offers an overview of her project, in which she examines operatic celebrity in the late eighteenth century within opera seria culture, and the social and generic conventions that played into the prima donna’s rise to prominence.
