Class Description
Explore seven neighborhoods in the Near West and Northwest of Chicago through a series of readings and walking tours. After an introductory meeting at the Newberry, the class will meet in a different neighborhood each week and explore it on foot. All of the sites will be accessible by public transportation, and directions will be provided. We will study the history of each neighborhood's initial settlement and its evolving population and reputation, paying attention to the landscape, built environment, local traditions, art, and culture.
Because our tours will involve a fair amount of walking, we encourage participants to wear comfortable shoes. You may also want to bring water and a snack.
Diane Dillon is a scholar-in-residence at the Newberry Library. She holds a PhD in the History of Art from Yale University.
