If Richard Bland Randolph, a former enlisted man and junior officer in the U. S. Navy, had carried out his threats, John Tyler would have been the first president of the United States to be assassinated. Scholar-in-Residence Christopher McKee will use Randolph’s unusually well documented life—and repeated incarcerations—to explore the nineteenth-century Navy’s cutting-edge medical response to individuals in its ranks with severe mental health problems.
