Seminar Description

The woodwinds – flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, and their many relatives – have a history going back to the Old Stone Age. Since the time of J.S. Bach they have appeared in chamber music, orchestral music, and in a rich solo repertoire. In the twentieth century clarinets and saxophones have been prominent in swing and jazz. We will consider the historical and technical context for each instrument and hear their music played by artists of past and present. Eight sessions.

Guy Marco, who received his PhD from the University of Chicago, has taught in eleven universities and written or edited more than fifty books. He has led Newberry seminars since 1996.
