Members of the Society of Collectors gathered on June 28 to honor Newberry Life Trustee Roger S. Baskes. Through the years, Roger has contributed more than 25,000 items to the Newberry, including atlases, maps, guidebooks, and geography textbooks from the sixteenth century through the present. The Roger S. Baskes Collection is one of the largest collections of geographical books assembled by a single collector.

“Roger and Julie have been tremendous friends to the Newberry in every way imaginable, from promoting staff development to supporting infrastructure, and it was a joy to celebrate them with the Society of Collectors,” said Astrida Orle Tantillo, President and Librarian of the Newberry Library. “When people think about the Newberry, they think about the Ayer, Ruggles, and Holzheimer collections, and in the generations to come, they will also think about the Baskes collection. Roger’s support to the Newberry has been remarkable.”

Members of the Society of Collectors support the Newberry by making a gift of $5,000 or more for the acquisition of materials. Members receive invitations to exclusive events that highlight new acquisitions and our curators' expertise.
